Manaslu Circuit Trek vs Annapurna Circuit: Which is Better in 2026?
Namaste and warm greetings from Kathmandu!
If you are reading this, you are likely standing at a crossroads, figuratively and literally. You have about two weeks in Nepal, you want to see 8,000-meter peaks, cross a high mountain pass, and experience the "real" Himalayas. Naturally, you’ve narrowed it down to the two titans of trekking: the wild Manaslu Circuit Trek and the legendary Annapurna Circuit Trek.
Ten years ago, this wasn't even a debate. The Annapurna Circuit was the undisputed king. But in 2026, things have changed. Road construction has altered the Annapurna classic, while Manaslu has risen as the "new" adventurous alternative.
At Adventure Life Nepal, we have guided thousands of trekkers on both routes over the last 25 years. We don’t just sell treks; we match you to the right experience.
So, do you choose the iconic comfort of Annapurna or the wild, restricted culture of Manaslu? Let’s break it down honestly.

Manaslu Circuit Trek – 13 Days: The "Wild" Choice
The Manaslu Circuit Trek is often called "The Annapurna Circuit of the 1980s." It offers what trekking used to be, remote villages, mule trains instead of jeeps, and a feeling of being far away from civilization.
The Route & Scenery
This trek circles Mt. Manaslu (8,163m), the 8th highest mountain in the world. You start low in humid, green river valleys and climb into the stark, arid trans-Himalayan Tibetan plateau.
The Highlight: The crossing of Larkya La Pass (5,106m) is dramatic, offering close-up views of Manaslu, Cheo Himal, and Himlung Himal.
Cultural Depth: This is a Restricted Area because it borders Tibet. The villages of Lho, Samagaun, and Samdo are inhabited by the Nubri people, who practice distinct Tibetan Buddhism. You aren't just looking at culture; you are walking through living history.
Pros & Cons
Pros: No cars, no roads on the main trail, authentic Tibetan culture, less crowded.
Cons: More expensive permits, simpler accommodation (shared bathrooms are common), and strictly requires a guide (no solo trekking allowed).
Expert Note: Our 13-day itinerary is "busy." It requires good fitness because we move steadily to complete the loop.
Annapurna Circuit Trek – 12 Days: The "Classic" Choice
The Annapurna Circuit Trek is legendary for a reason. It boasts perhaps the most diverse scenery of any trek in Nepal, ranging from lush jungle to the high-altitude desert of Mustang.
The Route & Reality (Roads)
In 2026, a road runs from the start almost up to Manang, and from Muktinath down to the end.
The 12-Day Twist: To fit this massive trek into 12 days, our itinerary uses Jeeps to skip the dusty, road-heavy lower sections (like Besisahar to Chame). We focus purely on the "Goldilocks Zone" the pristine high-altitude walking from Pisang to Manang to Thorong La Pass.
The Highlight: Thorong La Pass (5,416m) is higher than Manaslu’s pass and arguably offers a grander, wider panoramic view. The descent into the holy temple complex of Muktinath is spiritually rewarding.
Pros & Cons
Pros: Incredible variety of landscapes, "Apple Pie" luxury (excellent food, Wifi, attached bathrooms), generally cheaper permits.
Cons: You will see jeeps and motorcycles on parts of the trail. It is busy. The "wilderness" feeling is interrupted by infrastructure.
Difficulty & Altitude Comparison
Many trekkers ask us, "Which one is harder?"
The Verdict: Manaslu is physically harder.
Terrain: The trails on the Manaslu route are narrower, rockier, and involve more "Nepali Flat" (constant up and down). Annapurna trails are wider and more established.
Daily Hours: On our 13-day Manaslu package, expect 6–8 hours of walking daily. The 12-day Annapurna itinerary uses jeeps to skip the boring parts, so the actual walking days are slightly shorter (5–7 hours), though the pass day is long on both.
Acclimatization: Annapurna (Thorong La) is higher by 300m, which is significant. However, the infrastructure on Annapurna makes resting easier. On Manaslu, if you get sick in a remote village, evacuation is harder.
Cost Comparison: Why the Price Difference?
You will notice Manaslu packages are generally $150–$300 more expensive than Annapurna. Why?
Permits: This is the main factor.
Manaslu: Requires a Special Restricted Area Permit ($100/week in Autumn, $75/week in Spring).
Annapurna: Standard ACAP + TIMS (much cheaper).
Guide Rules: While Nepal now mandates guides for all trekkers, the rule is strictly enforced by police checkpoints in Manaslu. You cannot enter without a licensed guide and a minimum group size of two.
Crowds: The "Road vs. Trail" Factor
This is usually the deciding factor for our clients.
Choose Manaslu if you hate the sound of engines. Once you leave the starting point of Machha Khola, you won't see a vehicle until you finish the trek 12 days later. It is just you, the mountains, and the mule trains.
Choose Annapurna if you enjoy a social atmosphere. The teahouses are full of trekkers from around the world. It’s a great place to meet people, play cards in the evening, and enjoy a beer with new friends.
Best Time to Trek (2026/2027)
Both treks share the same optimal seasons.
Spring (March – May): Rhododendrons are blooming. Manaslu is spectacular with red and pink flowers against white peaks.
Autumn (Late Sept – Nov): Crystal clear skies. This is the busiest time for Annapurna.
Winter (Dec – Feb): Avoid Manaslu. The Larkya La pass often closes due to snow. Annapurna’s Thorong La can also close, but the lower regions remain accessible.
Which Trek Should YOU Choose?
Let’s simplify this based on your profile:
The "Comfort" Trekker: Annapurna Circuit. If you want a hot shower and a softer bed after a long day, this is for you.
The "Purist" Hiker: Manaslu Circuit. If seeing a jeep on a trekking trail ruins your day, choose Manaslu.
The Solo Traveler: Annapurna Circuit. While you legally need a guide for both, Annapurna is more social. Manaslu feels very isolated if you are alone with just a guide.
The Budget Traveler: Annapurna Circuit. Lower permit fees save you money.
The Culture Vulture: Manaslu Circuit. The Tibetan influence in Nupri valley is untouched by modernity.
